Duplex steel is more robust than austenitic or SS316 grades. It also provides formability struggling and excellent hardiness. SS316 contains 18% chromium and eight nickel whereas, duplex contains 18-28% of chromium and 4.5-8% of nickel or austenitic.

Since these grades include both austenitic and ferritic phases, they are referred to as "duplex" or "austenitic-ferritic." They're tougher and more corrosion-resistant than typical austenitic stainless steels like Type 304 and Type 316, and they're optimized to withstand the effects of chloride stress corrosion
