Desalination is the process of removing dissolved salts and minerals from saline water. Currently, desalination accounts for 1% of the drinking water across the globe. And the global water desalination market is expected to reach USD 28.83 billion by 2030.
Role of Stainless Steel in Desalination
The excellent corrosion-resistant performance enables some stainless steel highly desirable and eminently qualified for seawater and desalination service, not only for piping applications but for all desalting plant systems saltwater applications.
Duplex Steel and Super Duplex Steel are good alternatives to traditional austenitic grades of the 300-series for the construction of desalination plants. They have better corrosion resistance and higher strength, at least twice that of the austenitic grades. Therefore, less gauge and weight are needed which leads to further cost savings.
Duplex stainless steel has successfully implemented in many applications within desalination plants, including evaporators, SWRO and BWRO high-pressure piping, and numerous components in connection with product water processing.
6 Moly Alloys are also widely used for parts in contact with high-concentration seawater due to their excellent corrosion resistance. They contain between 6% to 7% of molybdenum, which will take longer to break the passive film hence more corrosion resistant. The most common 6 Moly grades for pipe, fittings and flanges are 254SMO (UNS S31254) and AL6XN (UNS N08367).
